Signs Your Roof May Contain Asbestos

Queensland homes built before the late 1980s were commonly roofed with asbestos cement sheeting — usually corrugated “Super Six” fibro. Visual identification alone is not reliable; the only definitive confirmation is laboratory testing by a licensed asbestos assessor. These indicators suggest asbestos may be present:

Built or Roofed Before 1986

Homes built or last re-roofed before 1986 have a high probability of asbestos cement roofing.

Fibre Cement Texture

Corrugated or flat sheeting with a dull grey, non-metallic fibre cement look rather than steel.

Thick Sheets, Smooth Edges

Sheeting approximately 6mm thick with smooth edges is characteristic of Super Six asbestos cement.

Known as “Fibro”

Previous owners or neighbours describing the roof as fibro is a strong indicator worth testing.

The Legally Compliant Removal & Replacement Process

Queensland law is strict: bonded asbestos roofing must be removed by a licensed Class-B removalist, disposed of at an approved EPA facility, and cleared by a licensed assessor before new roofing goes on. We manage every step under a single contract.

01

Asbestos Assessment & Report

A licensed asbestos assessor takes material samples and provides a written report confirming the presence and condition of asbestos, alongside our fully itemised quote.

02

Licensed Removal & EPA Disposal

A Class-B licensed, EPA-registered removalist we coordinate removes all sheeting using wet suppression and containment, then double-bags, labels, and disposes of it at an approved facility — with documentation.

03

Clearance & Structural Upgrade

A licensed assessor issues a formal clearance certificate before further work. We then inspect the timber frame and upgrade battens and tie-downs to current cyclone-rated QLD standards.

04

Colorbond® Installation & Finish

Genuine BlueScope® Colorbond® sheeting, ridge capping, new gutters and downpipes with Anticon® insulation as standard — followed by a quality walk-through and full clean-up.

Why Replace Asbestos with Colorbond® Steel

Once the asbestos is gone, the replacement matters just as much. Modern Colorbond® steel transforms the safety, look, and energy performance of your home.

Unmatched Durability

Tested against harsh Australian conditions. Won't crack under hail like terracotta or cement tiles, and resists rust from coastal salt air.

Thermal Efficiency

Coupled with Anticon insulation, Colorbond® reflects solar heat to drastically reduce your summer cooling bills — huge in Brisbane and Gold Coast.

90% Lighter Than Tiles

The drastic weight reduction removes massive structural strain from your home's framing — actually making your whole house more resilient.

Watertight Security

No more slipped tiles or crumbling pointing. Interlocking metal sheets provide superior protection against Queensland's torrential rainfall.

Asbestos Removal Experts

We coordinate fully licensed Class-B asbestos removalists for safe, EPA-compliant removal and disposal before your new roof goes on.

22 Designer Colours

Instantly modernise your home's kerb appeal. We bring Colorbond® colour samples to your property so you can see them against your house in natural light.

Asbestos Roofing in Queensland: The Essentials

What Super Six is, what the law requires, and exactly what you receive when the job is done properly.

⚠️

What Is Super Six (Fibro) Asbestos Roofing?

Queensland homes built or roofed before the mid-1980s commonly used asbestos cement (“Super Six” fibro) sheeting. It looks like corrugated or flat fibre cement — dull grey, not metallic, around 6mm thick with smooth edges. It can be easily confused with modern non-asbestos fibre cement and old corrugated iron.

Visual identification alone is not reliable. The only definitive confirmation is laboratory testing of a sample taken by a licensed asbestos assessor. Read our full asbestos roof removal guide for how to identify it.

⚖️

What Queensland Law Requires

Homeowners must not remove, cut, drill, repair, pressure-wash, sand, or otherwise disturb their own asbestos roofing — even on their own property. All bonded asbestos roofing must be removed by a licensed Class-B asbestos removalist.

The waste must be double-bagged, labelled, and disposed of at an approved EPA facility — it cannot go into a standard skip bin. After removal, a licensed assessor must issue a clearance certificate before any new roofing is installed. These are legal requirements, not options.

🤝

One Contract, One Point of Contact

Done separately, an asbestos re-roof means engaging an assessor, a removalist, a disposal contractor, and a roofer — and sequencing them yourself. We manage all of it under a single contract: the asbestos assessor, the Class-B licensed removalist, EPA disposal, timelines, and our own installation team.

We've handled dozens of asbestos removal and replacement projects across Brisbane, Gold Coast, Logan, Ipswich, and Moreton Bay. Request a quote and we'll walk you through the full process.

📄

The Documentation You Receive

A properly run asbestos re-roof leaves a paper trail, and you should expect all of it: the written asbestos report from the assessor, EPA disposal documentation confirming legal disposal, and the formal clearance certificate issued before installation began.

Your new roof comes with genuine BlueScope® Colorbond® steel backed by a manufacturer's warranty of up to 36 years, plus our workmanship guarantee. See our roof replacement page for what the installation itself involves.
